Besides earrings and chains, bangles form an important part of Indian jewelry in India. All types of bangles in India are worn in pairs, with one or more in each hand. There are many types of bangles in India, including gold, silver, plastic, platinum, glass and wood bangles.
Bangles were first made from metals of which gold bangles are the most expensive ones. Instead of wearing only gold ones, Indian women started wearing gold and glass ones in combination to make themselves look more attractive. These glass bangles are found in numerous colors and are usually between ¼ and 1/8 inch in width.
These glass bangles are usually smooth, with some texture or set with stones. When wearing those, they are usually worn in groups so that any arm movement that you make will create pleasant sounds. After some time, though bangles that were made from plastic started replacing the glass bangles, glass bangles are preferred in traditional functions.
Work on bangles increases its prices
Not only are gold bangles expensive, depending on the work done on the bangle, its price generally increases. Some have embroidery on them, some have small glass pieces on them, some paintings and some have small hangings joined to the bangles. In addition to this, the rarer is the color of the bangle, the more expensive it becomes.
Another type of bangle are bangles made from lac. These are the most oldest ones, which belong to the brittle category. This lac is a material similar to clay, which is molded in hot kiln like places and when hardened, colored and decorated with perhaps glass pieces to be used as bangles.
The latest entrants to the range of bangles are the rubber bangles that resemble wrist bands. These are worn more by youngsters and not only women. There are also plastic bangles that are worn to give a trendy look to the wearer.
Kangans are worn as a single piece
Besides having different bangles based on the different materials used for creating them, there are different types of bangles in the market too. One of them is the kanghan, which is a bangle that is thicker than ordinary bangles. They are usually worn on both sides of a set of bangles women wear.
There are also ornate kangans that are worn singly, to give a minimalistic look. These kanghans are available in metal, lac, silver, gold, brass and other materials. Even men wear a type of kanghan, called the kada.
Women in India also decorate their upper hands using ornate baju band or arm bands. They are shaped to stay in position with the help of pressure through straps that can be tightened as required.
